Most of the Arctic, like most of the world, is commonly owned. With ownership comes the obligation to manage our resources for the benefit of the total. To do that, we must understand the reality, the richness, and the responsibility of the North.

Alaska, the World, and Wally Hickel documentary film

Alaska, the World, and Wally Hickel is a public tv biographical documentary about former Alaska Governor and Secretary of the Interior Walter J. Hickel produced by Kenneth Mandel of Great Projects Media LLC and written and directed by Edward Gray.

Throughout his career, Wally Hickel confounded friend and foe alike because he defied the easy stereotypes of “environmentalist” and “businessman.” He was convinced that the concept of the commons – inspired by the history of Alaska – could show us how to balance development with preservation, satisfy our need for energy, and, he believed, even overcome poverty itself.

Governor Hickel's story is told with energy, candor, and the irreverent sense of humor for which this eminently quotable politician has always been known. View the companion website at
