March, 2006: Governor Hickel speaks to the People’s Chamber in Moscow

Academician Eygeny Velikov, the secretary of the newly-formed People’s Chamber, invited Governor Walter J. Hickel, the founder of the Institute of the North, to address the first session of the Chamber on March 23. The Chamber is a new entity created by Russian President Vladimir Putin to explore new ideas and approaches to Russia’s most challenging problems.

Hickel spoke at the Russian Center of International Scientific and Cultural Cooperation presenting a paper on the Alaska economic and political model, an unusual blend of free market economics, democracy and commonly owned lands and resources.

January 15, 2006: Address by Governor Walter Hickel

to the Conference for Young Alaskans, Fairbanks, Alaska

The importance of Alaska’s owner state as a model for the world was emphasized by Governor Walter J. Hickel in his address to the Conference for Young Alaskans in Fairbanks on Jan. 15. According to Governor Hickel, a state wealthy in resources held in common by residents should not be experiencing poverty.

The conference at University of Alaska Fairbanks commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Alaska constitution.  Fifty-five high school and postsecondary students from across Alaska, as well as young people involved in trades, considered five outstanding challenges facing Alaska and her people.  Together, they developed policy statements and proposed courses of action to be submitted to Alaska’s political leaders.

October, 2005: Governor Walter J. Hickel in Moscow

Governor Walter J. Hickel traveled to Moscow in October of 2005 at the invitation of academician Alexander Granberg to participate in the celebration of the 90th anniversary of Russia’s oldest think tank, the Center for the Study of Productive Forces.  Dr. Granberg hosted a symposium of economists and scholars to discuss Governor Hickel’s book, “Crisis in the Commons: the Alaska Solution”, for which Dr. Granberg wrote the introduction to the Russian edition.

The Center for the Study of Productive Forces was established in January 1915 to research the fields of geology, mineralogy, botany, zoology and other natural sciences for the purpose of sustainable development; and to develop a network of research institutes in Russia.  Over the years it has become known for its application of scientific methods to regional problems; the development of a system of regional economic forecasting; and its study of international regional research.

Governor Hickel’s visit emphasized the shared history between Russia and Alaska, as well as the unique stewardship required in the Arctic economy and environment.

A symposium featuring Governor Hickel’s book, Crisis in the Commons: The Alaska Solution was held October 19, 2005 at the Center for the Study of Productive Forces (SOPS), Moscow’s oldest economic institute. Over 40 leading Russian economists and academics participated.

The Director of SOPS, academician Dr. Alexander Granberg, introduces Governor Hickel at the Moscow symposium. Granberg wrote the introduction to the Russian edition of Hickel’s book.

Dr. Evgeny Velikov, director of the Kurchatov Institute of Science, announces the People’s Chamber, recently created by President Putin to explore new ideas for Russia’s future development.
