Southeast Emerging Leaders Forum

The Southeast Conference, through its 2010 Mid-Session Summit, brought together Southeast's citizens and leaders to address issues facing the region, and provided a platform for communicating to Alaska's legislature the region's needs and interests.

For the first time Southeast Conference created a space for emerging leaders in the region, the Southeast Emerging Leaders Forum.  Southeast Conference is in a unique position to support and connect young leaders within communities and between communities.

Voices of Choices

Founded by Governor Walter J. Hickel in 1994, the Institute of the North remains strongly committed to his legacy and Alaska’s future.

Gov. Hickel has always been known to stand up for Alaskans and Alaska, demonstrating the conviction of his principles by using his voice. Many know him for his passionate appeal to relate the obligations of ownership to Alaskans and the world. His firm belief that Alaskans must use the resources they own in common for the benefit of all is a constant reminder that Alaska’s future is secured when we all pull together.

With this in mind, the Institute of the North announces its latest initiative, Voices of Choices, a campaign for increased civic discourse. In the face of the many challenges facing the state, Alaskans must use their voices to work together to build an Alaska that provides jobs for its citizens, infrastructure and economic development solutions for its communities and opportunity for its youth.

Currently on summer hiatus, Constitutional Conversations was successful as a pilot program, with the series featuring discussion about the unique aspects of the Alaska Constitution; about the Constitution and individual rights; and the role of the Alaska judiciary. Planning is underway to resume Constitutional Conversations in Fall 2010 with a full program of topics.

Hosted by the Institute of the North with Loussac Library, conversations about the Alaska State Constitution are facilitated by Michael Schwaiger, a local Constitutional scholar and Nils Andreassen, Managing Director of the Institute of the North. Special guests have included Vic Fischer, John Havelock and Jack Roderick.
