Most of the Arctic, like most of the world, is commonly owned. With ownership comes the obligation to manage our resources for the benefit of the total. To do that, we must understand the reality, the richness, and the responsibility of the North.

You Own Alaska!

“Alaska is a unique land with a unique system of ownership. It’s time to share it with the world.”

Twice-Governor of Alaska and former Secretary of the Interior Walter J. Hickel

You Own Alaska! captures the early hopes and visions of Alaska’s elders and pioneers, as well as the views and stories of today’s Alaskans who share a common love for the Great Land and are carrying that vision forward.

This DVD engages young Alaskans across the state in a discussion of what the Owner State means to them. You Own Alaska! provides a starting point for dialogue around issues of ownership and citizens’ obligations to participate actively in public policy decisions and issues.

Highlights include images, ideas and interviews with Alaska’s founding fathers and current and emerging leaders regarding the Constitutional Convention, Alaska’s fight for Statehood, the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act and the future rights and responsibilities of all Alaskans.

Sections include: The Owner State | The Alaska Vision – A History |

Crisis in the Commons:  The Alaska Solution

The seminal work written by the Institute’s founder Walter J. Hickel, Crisis in the Commons: the Alaska Solution, articulates how those who live on and from the commons can claim the benefits of their birthright, breaking the colonial syndrome that produces victims, rather than beneficiaries, of the global economy.

Alaska in Maps - A Thematic Atlas and Alaska– A Land in Motion

Alaska in Maps is a thematic atlas of Alaska. In contrast to a topographic-type of atlas that emphasizes contour lines and selected settlement features, a thematic map offers maps of special topics. Examples of thematic maps found in Alaska in Maps include earthquakes, volcanoes and Native language regions.

Alaska in Maps was primarily designed for Alaska middle and high school students. However, it is also a useful atlas for anyone wanting to know about the geography of Alaska.
