Most of the Arctic, like most of the world, is commonly owned. With ownership comes the obligation to manage our resources for the benefit of the total. To do that, we must understand the reality, the richness, and the responsibility of the North.

Institute to Host Northern Airships Conference

The Institute of the North will be hosting "At the Crossroads of Practice and Policy: Commercial Applications of Northern Airships" in August 2012 in Anchorage, Alaska.

This conference will build on the work done in an August 2011 workshop hosted by the NASA Ames Research Center in collaboration with the Alaska Department of Transportation, "Cargo Airships for Northern Operations."

With growing interest in the possibility that airships present for northern communities and development, the Institute of the North is pleased to be able to be coordinating At the Crossroads of Practice and Policy: Commercial Application for Northern Airships. Building on the efforts that many others have initiated, we hope to be able to address some of the fundamental questions about bridging the challenges and opportunities associated with bringing a new transportation method to northern operations.

The Conference will be framed around four crucial elements:

    Addressing state-directed policy considerations
Bringing the private sector to the table to talk about markets
Identifying the operational characteristics necessary for northern application
Developing a strategic plan for commercial development

At one point, Alaska was known as the Air Crossroads of the World. Join us to explore how today’s “crossroads” is applying new technology to existing challenges. An increasingly busy Arctic means increasing opportunities – your participation in August will amplify how airships may be a means of meeting those opportunities.
