Most of the Arctic, like most of the world, is commonly owned. With ownership comes the obligation to manage our resources for the benefit of the total. To do that, we must understand the reality, the richness, and the responsibility of the North.

2011 International Beringia Days Conference

The 2011 International Beringia Days Conference takes place in Nome, Alaska on September 9-10, 2011

Beringia Days is a public forum sponsored by the National Park Service that highlights activities and projects in the Beringia region of the United States and Russia. The conference brings together the Native peoples of Alaska and Chukotka as well as Russian and American scholars, researchers, environmentalists, and representatives of government and non-governmental organizations. The conference attracts a wide variety of people working in or interested in the Beringia region. It provides a venue to explore opportunities for cooperation and collaboration.

This year the Shared Beringian Heritage Program is working in conjunction with the Institute of the North to plan the Conference. The purpose of the conference is to encourage local participation by those living in the Beringia region and to celebrate shared natural and cultural resources by highlighting Beringia projects. The program works to improve local, national, and international understanding to these resources and sustain the cultural vitality of Native people in the region.

The conference will highlight special projects of interest through presentations of materials and opportunities for sharing experience and knowledge about resources common to the region. Beringia Days provides a forum for connection for those doing work in the region, and is a great opportunity to learn more about National Park Service projects. This year we are also planning a Youth Forum that aims to bring together young leaders from the Beringia region to develop recommendations for issues affecting local communities and opportunities for future collaboration.

We hope that you will be able to participate. The Institute of the North will be assisting with travel logistics and information. Please contact Kristina Baiborodova at kbaiborodova@institutenorth.org or 907-771-2467.
